Packing for the bush: the short, honest list

Neutral colours, layers, a good pair of binoculars and less luggage than you think. Our guides' own packing list.

Field Notes

Soft-sided luggage is not a preference on light aircraft — it is a requirement. Most charter operators allow 15kg per person.

Clothing Neutral greens, browns and khaki; a warm fleece for dawn game drives; a light rain shell; a wide-brimmed hat; broken-in walking shoes.

Kit Binoculars are the single most useful thing you can bring. A 10x42 pair suits most people. Add a head torch, sunscreen, a power bank and a dry bag for dust.

Photography A 70–300mm lens covers most game drives. Bring spare batteries — charging is often limited to solar hours in camp. Always ask before photographing people, and never photograph the Rwandan border or military installations.
